Raiders released LB Edgerton Hartwell

Unfortunately this time of the year brings the unwelcome news that some veterans will be cut, thus ending any chance of playing in the NFL again – last week it was Browns DB Gary Baxter coming back from double knee surgery.  Yesterday, the Oakland Raiders released 9-year NFL veteran linebacker Edgerton Hartwell.  The former menacing Baltimore Ravens linebacker and special teamer had been slowed by an Achilles injury in recent years and the signing of safety turned linebacker Adam Archuleta spelled Hartwell’s doom.

Hartwell leaves the game with 274 tackles and 7.5 sacks in his career that included stops with the Ravens, Atlanta Falcons, Cincinnati Bengals, and Oakland Raiders.  As the Sacramento Bee wrote, “It is time to hang up the spikes when you’re cut for a back-up punter?” The Raiders signed punter Glenn Pakulak to cover for Shane Lechler who is out with an injury this week.

I am sure there will be more veteran heart-wrenching cut stories as NFL teams move toward cut dates on August 26  (Cutdown to maximum of 75 players) and August 30 (Cutdown to maximum of 53 players).
