Giants Lose Umenyiora for Season

The Giants lost another Sack Master as DE Osi Umenyiora tore his knee and requires surgery

(Philadelphia, Pa) — That sound everyone probably heard as the New York Jets won the Battle of NYC over the Super Bowl Champion Giants this weekend was “Paging Mr. Strahan, Paging Mr. Future Hall of Fame Defensive End Michael Strahan”.  The reason that the Giants were summoning the new FOX Sports mega personality was that New York Giants Pro Bowl defensive end Osi Umenyiora will be ending his ’08 season due to knee surgery to repair the lateral meniscus in his left knee.

The 5-year veteran from Troy State and last season’s G-Men sack leader with 13 was injured in the second quarter as his knee traumatically buckled while rushing the passer.  The scene was very serene, as everyone knew the loss of one of the Giants catalysts from their unexpected ’07 Super Bowl winning run was huge. The loss of Umenyiora however may leave the door open for the G-Men to bring 36-year old recently retired veteran Michael Strahan off the NFL on FOX set.

Giants head coach Tom Coughlin said of the injury to Umenyiora, “It was obviously the news that I did not want to hear, but after listening to the explanation and Dr. Warren’s thoughts on it, I am convinced that this is the right procedure and the right way to go.”

The pragmatic coach added that the normal recovery lasts four months, but I think that is a bit optimist given the explosive defensive end’s motor and position.

So the key question is “Where do the Giants turn?”  Luckily defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has emerging defensive star Justin Tuck, veteran Renaldo Wynn, Dave Tollefson, and possibly defensive end turned linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka to fill in former Umenyiora.  But everyone wants to know if Strahan after missing his second preseason in a row will comeback again.  We all know how Strahan produced last year after missing substantial time – Super Bowl leader of a nasty defense that produced a record 11 straight road-wins. Could this be another Super Bowl hangover season again in the NFL????

I have been hearing whispers that Strahan would need the 1-year, 8 Million dollar payout that he was seeking earlier to return in a big blue uniform.  My advice to Strahan is to walk away from the game on his own terms.  Sure the money is tempting given his recent divorce, but he can make it up easily by just being his usual charismatic self on FOX while not having to be beaten down by some 350-pound offensive tackle.  Strahan as I said back in June when he retired got to do what most athletes don’t get to do in that he was able to walk away at the apex of the NFL with a Super Bowl ring on his figure.  There is nothing left for big Mike to do other than show up early and be the sidekick of Howie, Jimmy, Terry, and rest of the FOX crew.  But you never know if the Giants coffers full of new stadium money will make Strahan change his mind.

Only time will tell, but expect Giants GM Jerry Reese and head coach Tom Couglin to be huddling as some roster moves are needed in New York as the Giants try to catch the Cowboys, plus hold off the Eagles and Redskins in the NFL’s toughest division for sure.
