2011 Philadelphia Eagles Training Camp Notebook: Jason Kelce Talks

Throughout the offseason leading up to the 2011 NFL Season, most Philadelphia Eagles fans expected a battle at the starting center position between former starter Jamaal Jackson, returning from an arm injury that ended his 2010 season, and Mike McGlynn.

But during training camp, it has quickly become apparent that a third man has entered the fracas, rookie Jason Kelce.  The 2011 sixth round  pick from Cinncinati has more than held his own and Kelce (6’2, 282) may be the winner to be the starting pivot in Week 1 of the Regular Season against the St. Louis Rams.

Though not the biggest guy, Kelce  is a “battler” who plays till the end of the whistle and has no problem mixing it up with larger defensive tackles.  However whether it is the promising rookie or Jackson or McGlynn making the calls on the O-line, the Birds have to ensure that their offensive line is ready for players like Cowboys DT Jay Ratliff and Packers NT BJ Raji.  Eagles quarterbacks were sacked 49 times in 2010 — bottom five of the league — and new O-line coach Howard Mudd will be expecting much more.

We will see if Kelce can become another Jeff Saturday under Mudd and join fellow rookie RG Danny Watkins in the Birds’ starting line-up, but so far the high-energy center has been one of the biggest stories at Eagles 2011 Training Camp.

Kelce talked to the media on Sunday August 7th and Taking It to the House’s Matt Lombardo was there.
