Danny Watkins To Get First Start Against Bills by Matt Lombardo

First round draft choice Danny Watkins will get his first taste of NFL action on Sunday when he gets the start against the Bills. Watkins was inactive for the first four weeks of the season.

It was another week and another change for the Eagles on Wednesday at the Novacare Complex.

After shuffling their linebackers each of the last two games, the winds of change blew through the Eagles offensive line leading up to Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills. It was announced that first round draft choice out of Baylor Danny Watkins will get his first career start in week five.

“I think he’s just learned a lot about how he needs to slow things down in his mind and simplify them,” Veteran right tackle Todd Herremans said of Watkins’ improvements in recent weeks. “Rather than over-processing everything. Just take care of what is his responsibility.

Head Coach Andy Reid confirmed the move prior to Wednesday’s practice, and reiterated his earlier statement that Watkins needed to take a step back before taking a big step forward.

“He’s a very physical player with a big body and he’s not an idiot,” Herremans said. “In a lot of ways, people are saying that he just can’t pick things up. I don’t think that’s the case, he was just given a lot to digest right away.”

The lack of OTA’s and a shortened training camp due to the NFL lockout clearly stunted Watkins’ progress. The former British Columbian firefighter was chosen 23rd overall in the first round of April’s NFL Draft. Watkins started every pre-season game before being benched in the lead up to the season opener against St. Louis on September 11th.

Taking Watkins’ place at the start of the season was Kyle Devan, who played under offensive line coach Howard Mudd when the pair were in Indianapolis.

“It’s professional football,’ Devan said. “They’re going to put Danny out there, and I’m fine with that. I’m still going to go out there and do everything I can to help get Danny ready.”

The Eagles kickoff against the Bills in the first of two games before the bye week at 1:00 on Sunday afternoon.
