(Philadelphia, Pa) — With all of the attention on Michael Vick and his ongoing “Who Let the Dogs Fight” soap opera, I ask “where is Marcus Vick?” Vick II thought that new Dolphins Head Coach Cam Cameron was in his corner starting this NFL offseason and even said “He is going to give me a fair shot. There’s no doubt I can [be an NFL receiver]. I need to run better routes.” Well Marcus, you were wrong as the Dolphins jettisoned him on May 2, 2007.
Vick was on a make good deal with former coach Nick Saban spending most of 2006 on the practice squad and appearing in only one game. He was used a slash player WR/KR/QB, but he finished with zero catches. Cameron decided he didn’t need the headache from a player who had numerous infractions at Virgina Tech. Vick II had so many incidents at VT (Stomping on a player, Serving Alcohol to minors, and other offenses) that they kicked him out ot school leaving him to go undrafted in the 2006 NFL Draft.
Vick II will now need to find another team willing to take a look at him, which will be difficult given the problems swirling around his brother. With teams finalizing their rosters for training camp with draftees and undrafted free agents, Vick will have to convince anyone that he can contribute on special teams. I believe with the correct quarterback training, Vick II could return to the quarterback position as a developmental type in the AFL or CFL. With the wide open games that are played in both leagues, Vick II could work on his throwing, uses his speed, and work on reading defenses. He reminds me of AFL veteran quarterback Raymond Philyaw (cat quick with a strong arm). These leagues have been a spring board back to the NFL for some and Vick II may benefit from the experience. At the worst he could gain experience for NFL Europa or even the UFL (Mark Cuban’s new invention).
